This package is incredible and came in a timely fashion. The only issue I have had is with the remote. I could not get it to work with the D5100. In frustration I decided to read the fine print on the remote's box and saw though many other Nikon DSLR cameras were listed the D5100 was not on the list. Just a heads up. The remote is practically free with this package though and is still worth every penny. I am not too sure if they just put the wrong remote in my package or not, but again for 2 bucks I can purchase the correct remote. No biggie.

I love it. Everything in this package is very nice and I recommend it. There was a cheaper version of this package, BUT the zoom lens didn't have VR so it made it quite difficult to take pictures at longer focal lengths. I say you invest a bit more and buy this kit instead.

As a long-time owner of the Nikon D5000, and former owner of the Nikon D60, I was eager to purchase the D5100 after seeing the announcements and pre-reviews. Being one of the lucky ones to buy the D5100 with 18-55VR kit earlier this week, I've had a few days to play with this camera and can honestly say it's a solid upgrade to the D5000 I'm replacing, and should be on the short list of consideration for any "prosumer" looking to purchase a D-SLR with outstanding image quality, performance, and low-light capability in a lightweight, compact (for an SLR) body. And, unlike the D5000, this D-SLR finally has a usable Live View and HD video capabilities both with continuous autofocus.

First of all, it's important to understand where the D5100 fits in Nikon's capabilities. This is a fantastic new offering from Nikon. You get most of the best parts of the D7000 for 1/3 cheaper. If you are looking for a starter camera or a back up body to the D7000 this is it.

Here are the major differences between the D5100 and D7000.

D5100
Exact same sensor and processing abilities as the D7000. Some of the best Image Quality available in any DSLR. ISO 3200 is very usable with low noise.

- Swivel screen while the D7000 is fixed -- Since the contrast autofocus (ie Live View) is not very good on either of these cameras this is not really a player unless you are using a tripod. Then the swivel screen is very useful.

- 4 fps vs 6 fps for D7000 - No big deal 4 fps is plenty fast to fill your card with similar looking pictures. Also, in RAW D7000 buffers out pretty fast and then slows down anyway.
- 11 focus points vs 39 for D7000 - Most of the time not really a big deal. Sometimes all those extra points get in the... Read more

I owned this lense before, and this is a replacement. I'm using it with an inexpensive D40 ... the combo is perfect.
You do not need the more expensive VR model unless you are shooting between sundown and sunrise, or have a case of the shakes ... use a UV filter of 52mm size, but pass on ND or Polar filters unless you are shooting in full sunlight. This is not a fast lense.
Be VERY careful from whom you buy this lense from, especially the east coast vendors - alot of gray market, used, damaged lenses being peddled from NY and NJ dealers. Also, my vendor totally lied to me about having the lense in stock, and it took weeks until I actually got my lense.
You should CALL them directly, get their name, and grill them on availability and condition of the lense.

if you got the camera kit lens ie. 18-55mm lens this is a great addition to your camera supply list. The lens is very light weight and performs like a nikon lens should not much to say about that, but it does come in very handy for those subjects that are a little further away. I also used it for some portrait shots at about 70mm, awesome shots. the cleaning kit is very handy to make sure your camera and lens stay in tip top shape. the uv haze filter is useful for blocking haze obviously but also protects the the lens from any debris or scuffing that may ruin your shots. It will take some practice in switching lens from 18-55 to 55-200 in a timely manner so you dont miss that great shot but it is still worth it. Great buy for the price.
